Candidate Selection Rule #5: Let Them Talk

You will learn more about a candidate from their lips than from your own.

Let them talk. Resist the temptation to tell them all about you. Of course you are very much more interesting, but just the same it is your interviewee who you are trying to land. Give them rope.

Keep nodding your head and saying yes.

Do it all the time. When you ask a question do it to draw them out, make sure it can’t be answered with a simple yes or no. Be sympathetic and understanding. Don’t criticise anything they say. Don’t even let a disapproving look cross your face.

A candidate will dodge off anything that they think you don’t like the sound of, so don’t feed signals.

– “And what did you do next then?”

– “Tell me more”

– “Take your time and we’ll try to cover everything”

These are your lines. Say them smoothly.
